Saint Megaera

April 14 is the Feast Day of Saint Megaera, who martyred herself in the conviction that her fellow nuns were conspiring against her. “Dark gossip and darker plots abound,” she wrote in her diary, “and I will ascend to heaven without the others!” She then threw herself off the belltower and fell to her death. The other nuns were extremely surprised, and there was some speculation that Megaera might have been, as the local parlance had it, “a wee bit touched.” She is the patron of those persecuted without the help of others.
